After a strong debut album Jack Harlow avoided the sophomore slump by dropping another solid LP and he didn’t take forever to do it (about 1 year and 5 months). That’s What They All Say was released December 11th, 2020. And sold 51 K the first week. This project will do 100 K in the first week and probably a lot more thanks to the second single off the album First Class. This song sampled the 2006 Fergie song Glamorous. It peaked as high as number 1 in many countries including the US Billboard Hot 100 which includes all genres, not just Hip-Hop and R&B. What’s Poppin was Jack’s first hit but his song with Lil Nas X INDUSTRY BABY has allowed him to move into a more mainstream space.
Jack’s execution when it comes to flow and cadence is undeniable. He does say some cheesy lines that makes him sound white but I think in 2022 it actually works to his advantage. We’ve seen the white rapper “gangster” persona so many times it’s not cool any more. I appreciate Jack being himself. If I had to describe him and his music in one more word it would be “groovy”. He reminds me of Austin Powers lol. Some people love him while other people hate him and usually it’s for the same reason. His weakest is his strength.
If I’m being picky he does have too many mellow songs for my liking. I would have liked to hear a couple more trap sounding songs like Dua Lipa from this album or Face of My City on the last album. There is more tempo on this album. He could have also used a couple more features earlier in the album. There is only 1 feature through first 9 tracks and just 4 on the entire 15 song album. The features come from Pharrell Williams, Drake, Justin Timberlake, and Lil Wayne so the star power is not the issue. I wouldn’t have mind hearing EST Gee and Bryson Tiller again. Jack, Gee, and Bryson are all from Louisville and they each have there own lane but they have always made good music together. Both Bryson and Gee were on the last album and I’m sure we’ll get more collaborations in the future but now is the best time. This is especially true for Jack and EST Gee as they are both entering there prime. Most rappers are considered successful if they have a 5 year run which isn’t long. You have to stay productive while your hot with out over saturating and that’s a fine line.
Drake had the best feature and maybe the best verse on the album. He bodied his verse on Churchill Downs. If you don’t fuck with that verse then your just being a hater or don’t like Drake. On The Breakfast Club Jack said he did not fix his verse but did add to it after hearing Drake’s verse. This is the reason the song is somewhat lengthy running over 5 minutes. The amount of tracks (15) and total length of the album was perfect at 45 minutes. Jack also confessed on “The Breakfast Club” that song “Dua Lipa” was specifically about the English singer/songwriter.. He said he played it for her over FaceTime before he released it. She said the song “wasn’t really her kind of music” but she did approve it. Jack said if she didn’t like the song then he would have scrapped it from the album. This song turned out to be my favorite.
Jetsonmade did a lot of the heavy lifting on “That’s What They All Say” including key tracks like “What’s Poppin”, Way Out, Already Best Friends, and Route 66. However, on this album he only produced the song I Got A Shot. This time around we see more of Boi-1da. In the past he also had success with Jack as he produced the single Tyler Hero. On this album he produced 4 tracks. The highlights being “Churchill Downs” with Drake and the lead single Nail Tech. Boi-1da and Drake have been working together for many years but this time it’s to Harlow’s advantage. Overall I gave this album a rating of 80 percent which is a 4 star rating.
Best Song: "Churchhill Down" Feat. Drake
