Memphis has always been a hub for great music. When people think of Memphis, Tennessee and music the first thing that comes to mind is great country music or Elvis Presley. More quietly under the scenes there has also been some great rappers come out of Memphis as well. In the early 90s you have 36 Mafia along with 8Ball and MJG. The next big thing out of Memphis was Yo Gotti who released his debut album in 1996. More recently there is Young Dolph who took off in 2016 when he was featured on OT Genasis’s Cut It.
Right now Memphis is as strong as it’s ever been. Moneybagg Yo and Blac Youngsta are hot. Both artist are signed to Yo Gotti’s record label CMG. At the same time we also have Young Dolphs cousin and protege Key Glock as well as 18 year old prodigy NLE Choppa. NLE is proving he is not only one of the best artist to come out of a Memphis but also one of the hottest artist in the industry. Next up out of the Bluff City is Pooh Shiesty.
It’s not always easy for legends to find talent. Just ask Michael Jordan who’s Charlotte Hornets haven’t been good since he’s been there. Gucci Mane is a legend in the rap game and he might have found a star in Pooh Shiesty. At just 21 years old Pooh has signed to Gucci Mane’s label 1017. Gucci’s first artist to drop a solo project was Foogiano who put out Gutta Baby in the fall. While that mixtape was average I think Shiesty was showed a lot more promise. Shiesty first gained momentum from the song Twerksum which was released on the 1017 mixtape So Icy Gang, Vol. 1. It became one of the most streamed songs on iTunes. The song is also on Shiesty’s mixtape Shiesty Season but he is not in any way a one hit wonder.
Shiesty does have some star power features on this mixtape which makes it feel more like an album. Lil Durk, 21 Savage, Tay Keith, and of course Gucci Mane are all featured on this project. Pooh did a feature on the song Should’ve Ducked which was on the deluxe version of Lil Durk’s album The Voice. That song came out at the perfect time. Just a week before Shiesty dropped Shiesty Season. That song alone probably allowed Pooh to gain thousands of listeners. Durk returned the favor by dropping a verse on Backed Up. The second track on this mixtape which is one of my favorites. Another favorite was Box of Churches featuring 21 Savage.
While there are some great features on this album, Pooh Shiesty can certainly have success with out any help. The best song of the entire project is probably Guard Up which has no features. Shiesty has that southern twang you would expect from a southern artist but you can still hear everything he is saying. I wouldn’t consider him a mumble rapper like many other artists his age. He has some raw lyrics but his music is still fun and he like to make references to sports. You hear a few basketball references on this mixtape. Guard Up and Take A Life are good examples of this. In Take A Life is a reference to current Philadelphia 76er and future hall of famer Dwight Howard. Shiesty says in the hook:
Get heavy traffic in the trap, we be posted up like Dwight.
Shiesty has some raw lyrics and a unique voice. What separates him from other young artist is his ability to make hooks. A lot of young rappers these days have decent bars but there hooks are just repetitive phrases. Shiesty has catchy hooks that show his song writing ability. While the hooks are defiantly catchy they are still raw street lyrics. He has the ability to turn grimy lyrics into to fun songs to listen to. Shiesty makes enjoyable music that doesn’t get too deep.
In the song Neighbors the hook goes:
The chopper stay so close to me that you would think we neighbors. That p*ssy not what he 'posed to be, 'cause his mama raised him. We had a clear shot on his head, but I think God saved him. You never walked up, hit your man, you probably never grazed him.
When just reading these lyrics they might seem over the top. However, Pooh has the ability to spit these kind of bars on trap beats that get you hyped up and even want to dance. Think of a song like Bad and Boujee by the Migos.
Overall, Pooh Shiesty has a bright future. Right now I believe he has the most promise of all the members on 1017 roster. It’s still early yet but he’s already been featured on A-list rappers LPs like Lil Durk. Expect to see many more features very soon. With a GOAT like Gucci by his side he has already caught the eye of many big people in the industry. Recently on Adam22’s No Jumper podcast 100K Track said Pooh was one of his favorite new rappers. That says a lot coming from a guy who has managed guys like YNW Melly and the late King Von.
I wasn’t too excited going into this album. 1017 put out So Icy Gang, Vol. 1 in October while Foogiano put out his Gutta Baby mixtape in November. Both showed some promise but they were both just average mixtapes. Shiesty Season has been by favorite of the 1017 releases. Judging it based on a mixtape level I gave this project a 4 ⭐️ rating.
Best Song = “Guard Up”
