With his signature storytelling and deeply evocative lyricism, Craig Finn returns with Bethany. Produced by GRAMMY®-winner Adam Granduciel and featuring guest vocals from Kathleen Edwards and Sam Fender, the upcoming album promises a rich, character-driven narrative—and "Bethany" is the perfect introduction to its world. Opening the record with a tale of faith, failure, and redemption, Finn crafts the story of a man who enters the clergy without truly believing—only to wrestle with the aftermath of his fall from grace. Finn had to say:

This was the first song I wrote that brought me into the world of this album. It’s the first song I showed producer Adam Granduciel when we talked about making a record. It’s the first song we recorded. It’s the first song on the album, which feels right spiritually. It introduces the record’s main character, a guy who became a clergy person without having actual faith, and the aftermath of his fall from grace. When we got the take of this song, I knew we were on track to make something really cool. Adam’s guitar solo still gives me chills.

He adds:

I believe this to be the most narrative record I have made. Most songs concern a protagonist who pursued a career as a clergyman despite a lack of faith. The record tells the story of his rise and fall and redemption, while also filling out the details of his travels and the world in which he lives. I am very proud of what we made, I hope you enjoy.

Following the album’s first single, People Of Substance, which Rolling Stone praised as “vintage Finn” with “sprawling, shimmering sonic hallmarks”, Always Been is shaping up to be one of his most narrative-driven and ambitious solo projects yet. Finn will hit the road this spring, joining Bob Mould on tour from April 1 – April 18, bringing his gritty storytelling and cinematic songwriting to live audiences across the U.S. Stay tuned for "Always Been," arriving April 4 via Tamarac Recordings and Thirty Tigers Records.
