Renowned Kentucky musician Ben Sollee returns with a powerful new song, One More Day," from his highly anticipated album Long Haul. This track, along with the rest of the album, marks Sollee’s first solo studio effort in seven years and showcases his profound musical journey and resilience. Drawing from influences as varied as Appalachian music, Muscle Shoals, and sounds from Polynesia and West Africa, Sollee's unique blend of cello and vocals creates a rich, textured experience reminiscent of Paul Simon’s Graceland. Sollee says:
‘One More Day’ is dedicated to my long-time friend and musical brother Jordon Ellis, who chose to end his life in early 2023. The song is intended to be a tiny anthem for anyone struggling with depression to ‘give it one more day.’ The rhythm and energy are inspired by our many jams on and off stage.
Despite the challenges of long COVID and personal losses, including the deaths of his mentor Jon Rieger, his father Bob Sollee, and his long-time musical partner Jordon Ellis, Saollee continues:
I believe there is an innate intelligence within us that can serve as a compass in life. In many ways, long-COVID was my teacher and I’m still learning to let go, be present, and listen.
This heartfelt dedication highlights Sollee’s deep connection to his music and the personal experiences that shape his work. Produced under the guidance of sonaBLAST! Recordings, "Long Haul" is a testament to Sollee’s enduring spirit and musical innovation. The album features breathy woodwinds, choirs, tactile hand percussion, and Sollee's signature cello, bringing a human touch to every track. Notably, this album is also recorded in Dolby ATMOS Spatial Audio. Alongside the album release, Sollee has continued his philanthropic efforts, scoring films like LAND and Maggie Moore(s) and launching Canopy, a non-profit organization supporting Kentucky businesses.
