“It’s a big thing coming.” Marina Sakimoto’s words ring true as Shunkan—the LA-based rock project of Sakimoto—makes a long-awaited return with her third studio album, Kamikaze Girl. Arriving May 6, 2025, via Rite Field Records, this marks her first full-length release in six years. The album examines the process of rebuilding after falling apart. Leading the charge is Hellbound, a melancholic yet entrancing single that captures the tension between yearning for the best while expecting the worst. With Sakimoto’s honeyed vocals layered over bright guitar riffs that echo late-night memories, the track is both introspective and cathartic. Reflecting on the single, Sakimoto says:
I like ‘Hellbound’ as the first track of the album because it feels like the initial descent into a transformative period for me. There’s that space in your life where you start sensing something (or someone) may not be the best for you, but the allure of it keeps you around because… what else do you have to lose? Nihilism—mixed with a lost sense of identity—is one hell of a drug. Sonically, I wanted this track to reflect what I was listening to at the time, which started with revisiting the Lost in Translation soundtrack while I was in Japan.

Shunkan signed with Rite Field Records last fall, quickly setting the stage for her first full-length project since Cumberland Falls in 2019. Originally debuting with Honey, Milk & Blood in 2014, Sakimoto gained early acclaim from DIY, Brooklyn Vegan, and Far Out Magazine, eventually solidifying her place in indie rock with The Pink Noise and its fan-favorite tracks, Garden and S.A.D. Now, with "Kamikaze Girl," Shunkan steps into her most refined and introspective era yet. Stream “Hellbound” now and pre-order the album to experience the next chapter in her sonic evolution.
